American Made Takes on Tariffs

By Orian Rugs

As the list of items subject to tariffs grows, so does concern in the home furnishings industry. With a tremendous amount of raw materials sourced from China, the impending 25% tariff threatens the well-being of retail. And, while many are shifting their gaze to India or Turkey, American manufacturers are raising their hand to remind retailers that they are positively positioned to combat the impact of imports.

Orian Rugs manufactures their products in the United States and will experience zero ramifications from the January 2019 tariff launch. Brandon Culpepper, Chief Revenue Officer for Orian Rugs, reminds brands of all sizes that “Orian is well-positioned to serve American retailers in the current economic environment. Our products are made in America – including design, yarn extrusion, weaving, finishing and shipping.”

The operation happens under one roof in Anderson, SC, creating an unparalleled outfit that allows the company to keep costs low while generously supporting the American workforce.

Orian Rugs is just one of the many American manufacturers experiencing an uptick. With a reported 370,000 new manufacturing jobs added in the last two years, National Association of Manufacturers Chief Economist Chad Moutray said to The Washington Post, “Manufacturers are more optimistic than any time in modern history. Pro-growth tax and regulatory reform has given manufacturers the confidence to hire more workers, raise wages and increase investments.”

A large part of this confidence comes from the certainty that American manufacturing is perfectly poised to offer relief to the home furnishings industry. So, with a rally-cry to worried retailers, Culpepper closed, “Orian is vertical, efficient and domestic – which means that the styling and value we offer stands out in the industry more than it ever has before. We are America’s answer for woven rugs in this era of price hikes due to tariffs and raw material price increases.”

By Carol Tisch & Lisa Vincenti

NEW YORK — The spring 2017 New York Home Fashions Market, running from March 27-30, is shaping up to deliver lots of newness and special customized programs tailored to drive profitable sales for big box retailers, discounters and domestics chains.

Five rug companies – Feizy, HRI, Momeni, Rugs America and Rizzy Home – will be presenting in new showrooms at the semi-annual textile event, most having relocated to larger spaces. Innovations in fiber, construction and weave abound, with many brands introducing mixes of yarns to create textural effects in machine made rugs at affordable prices designed to appeal to NY market shoppers.

Bohemian and tribal looks as well as abstract designs that saturated winter markets have already been placed with major retailers, with several rug companies reporting strong Q1 sales in these categories.

Following is a preview of the looks rug companies expect to top buyers’ hit lists as they shop New York showrooms.

[…]

Orian is brings a new vintage-like collection of Persian-styled designs to New York Home Fashions Market called Bohemian. Machine made of 100 percent polypropylene, these classic designs feature motifs in a blend of deep, saturated colors. From large whimsical patterns incorporating organic elements to vintage or worn looks, Bohemian rugs carry an MSRP of $327 in 5×8.

The space-dyed effects featured in the Next Generation and Bohemian collections are achieved through Orian Rugs’ proprietary Fusion Color Technology, which the company says delivers high-value polypropylene rugs at a fraction of the cost of space-dyed rugs. In response to the increased attention and demand for these made in the U.S.A. collections, Orian Rugs has expanded these collections and releasing new designs in both Next Generation and Bohemian at the upcoming New York and High Point Spring Markets.  Orian, 1261 Broadway, Suite 1108.

Bohemian & Tribal Looks Headline 2017 Rug Collections — Part 1 & 2

February 24, 2017

ATLANTA — At the January Atlanta International Area Rug Market, the most prevalent stories in rug introductions for 2017 included a unanimous emphasis on Bohemian looks, an increase in beautiful abstracts, and innovations in yarn technology and machine-weaving.

In this exclusive multi-part series, RugNews.com analyzes the trends on display at dozens of AmericasMart Atlanta showrooms for the first rug premieres of the year, and catches up with other vendors who launched their 2017 lines at Las Vegas Market.
Part 1 focuses on the breathtaking array of Bohemian and tribal looks on show, with their primitive or folksy motifs and palettes of earth tones, muted jewel tones, and the resurgence of organic shades of indigo.
Our review of best-of-market picks from some of the top showrooms reveals that the line between Boho and classic traditional rug patterns has blurred. The common denominator for these new traditionals is intentional wearing or semi-erased patterns that are reimagined in contemporary colors such as fuchsia, yellow, orange and purple.
[…]
Bohemian looks are also top of mind at Orian, according to Scott Miller, director of design. “We are going for a very global bazaar, hippie look, with layers of distress on traditional designs,” he said. Indigo, paprika red and orange dominated the color palettes of the company’s bohemian-style rugs.
[…]
Bohemian style rug displays at Orian’s showrooms were keyed to travel as well as Sherwin-Williams color projections for 2017 and beyond, as well as a global bazaar look replete with silk pillows reinforcing a color story revolving around indigo, paprika, red, orange and teal.
Scott Miller, director of design at Orian, said the Boho rugs are part of a new, free-spirited collection that was a market hit. Even more popular were rugs utilizing with the company’s new weaving technology, dubbed Next Generation, which employs multiple shades of the same color to give more dimension and sharper detail and delineation between the different colors.

Building a better machine-made rug

Engineering, innovations offer the look at a value

Building value

For years, the machine-made market was limited to the high and low ends of the spectrum. […]

That gap between Axminsters and low-end machine-made rugs started filling in in the 1990s and early 2000s as hand-tufted wool rugs and better-looking, better-quality machine made synthetics began entering the marketplace.

Deonn Baker, vice president of e-commerce and marketing for machine-made specialist Orian Rugs, said the rise of electronic Jacquard looms a little more than two decades ago opened new opportunities for design and reduced the time it takes to take a design from concept to finished product by around 90%.

“Recent improvements in CAD equipment have further advanced design capabilities and opportunities. The combined effect of the evolution of looms and yarn process advancements create indoor and indoor/outdoor woven rugs that have better performance (withstand spills, resist stains) are more durable, long-lasting,” Baker said.

In October, the Anderson, S.C.-based manufacturer rolled out three new collections that incorporate the new Fusion 24 Color Technology developed by Director of Design Scott Miller and Vice President of Development and Design Jeff Hughes. Fusion 24 allows the company’s designers to control precise placement and infusion of up to 6 shades of each color, in essence, creating space-dyed looks without space-dyeing the yarn.

[…]

Added Baker: “Lower cost, color consistency, and replicable design are also notable advantages of manufactured rugs. Consumers who are much more likely to be fashion-forward and trend focused will re-decorate often.”

U.S. manufacturers tout quality, national pride

Alexa Boschini

American manufacturing is a hot topic of conversation this election cycle. But in an increasingly global economy, does the “Made in the USA” label still have value? According to home furnishings companies that produce some or all of their product in the United States, the answer is yes for a multitude of reasons, from greater quality control to pride in the American labor force.

According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the U.S. furniture manufacturing industry’s gross output and value added to the overall GDP have risen steadily since 2010, though not quite to pre-recession levels. The research on the value of American manufacturing to the consumer varies.

A 2015 Consumer Reports survey found nearly eight out of 10 U.S. consumers would prefer an American-made product over an import, and about 60% of respondents said they would pay 10% more for American products. But a 2016 Associated Press-GFK poll found that while nearly three out of four consumers would like to buy American, they think those products are often too expensive or hard to find. The majority of respondents said they would buy a cheaper import over a more expensive domestic product.

Though imports remain a significant contributor to the home accents universe, domestic manufacturers say there are still plenty of reasons to take pride in making product in the United States.

“The Oliver Gal Artist Co. is known for its unbeatable quality,” said Assi Glikshtein-Gal, CEO of Hollywood, Fla.-based wall art specialist Oliver Gal. “Made in the USA is a symbol of virtue which you cannot achieve when made in China or Mexico. We deliver high-quality and high-end finishes to retail, interior designers and the final customer. The United States is a symbol of high-quality products and a standard that makes us proud.”

 American Made

The Federal Trade Commission regulates Made in the USA labeling. If a business chooses to advertise a product as Made in the USA, then the FTC requires that “all or virtually all” of that product must be made stateside. In addition to the product’s final assembly taking place in the United States, the FTC dictates that “all significant parts, processing and labor that go into the product must be of U.S. origin,” and the product should only contain negligible “foreign content.”

“Our entire line can be manufactured in the U.S., but it’s all about what finish the client chooses to use,” said Marty Perrell, president and owner of Los Angeles-based art producer Daleno. “If they want hand-embellished product, 100% of our hand-embellished product is manufactured in the U.S. (We manufacture domestically) mainly due to the fact that I wanted to make sure the quality of the product was what the clients were expecting, so I’m able to ensure that by overseeing the manufacturing whenever it’s done in Los Angeles. Secondly, I wanted to support the labor staff in the U.S.”

Several rug manufacturers produce at least a portion of their line domestically, including Capel, Mohawk, Orian Rugs and Oriental Weavers. Orian Vice President of Development and Design Jeff Hughes said the ability to control the supply chain from beginning to end helps the company with meeting its customers’ needs, regardless of the time frame.

[…]

“The strength of Orian is we can turn the ship really quickly for special requests; things happening in the industry,” Hughes said. “We can meet with our yarn folks, finishing, shipping and manufacturing. There are no special meetings where someone has to change their schedule; we can meet and execute it quickly.”

Orian bows Fusion 24 program at market

Space-dyed looks made at value price points

Thomas Lester

Orian Rugs’ newest design program brings the look of space-dyed yarn to the marketplace without actually space dyeing the yarn.

The Anderson, S.C.-based manufacturer rolled out three new collections that incorporate the new Fusion 24 Color Technology developed by Director of Design Scott Miller and Vice President of Development and Design Jeff Hughes. Fusion 24 allows the company’s designers to control precise placement and infusion of up to 6 shades of each color.

“Jeff and I have figured out a great way to take multiple amounts of colors and plan them in a way they can interact with each other,” Miller said. “That’s why it gives you the multiple shades in the backgrounds of each element. What we tried to do is use a palette that’s very mainstream and can open the doors to a wide range of looks and styles.”

The three collections that are made using the new technology are Next Generation Carolina Wild, Bohemian and Symphony.

Space-dyed looks are created using multiple strands/reeds of color at a single time; comparatively, traditional space dye blasts a continuous strand of fiber with multiple variants of a color to create rugs with a heathered look. Officials say the color technology, can be applied to a broad spectrum of styles, ranging from modern, contemporary, traditional and transitional rugs.

“The consumer benefit is we have not introduced any additional cost for the consumer. We’re not passing that on to the consumer,” said Deonn Baker, vice president of e-commerce and marketing. “They are getting a very sophisticated, space-dyed look for less than the cost. It is very retail ready and it can range from geos, to traditionals, contemporary designs, moderns. You get the full spectrum of design patterns and an endless amount of color combinations that have been created.”

For a 5×8 rug, Next Generation Carolina Wild and Symphony each retail for $199, while Bohemian’s MSRP is $178.

The South Carolina Chamber of Commerce announced South Carolina’s 25 fastest growing companies on Thursday — nine Charleston area businesses on the list — two in the top three.

Barling Bay (Charleston) was named the third fastest growing company in S.C., preceded by Pegasus Steel (Goose Creek) with second-place honors.

“We supply large steel plate components that go into the vehicles, rear walls, side walls, that go into critical defense programs,” said Tony Deering, CEO, Pegasus Steel.

Their business model is as sturdy as the steel they manufacture. Their workforce has grown from 12 employees in 2007 to 150 today. They say the sky’s the limit.

“We’re now aerospace certified so were in discussions with Boeing to meet their needs and several other players in the area,” said Deering.

The workforce was just one of factors that put them near the top of the list.

“They had to be in business more than 3 years. So we looked at the last 3 years of revenue. They had to be over $3 million in revenue. They had to be headquartered in SC,” said Christina Schleifer, Communications Director, The Capital Corporation.

The Lowcountry had more businesses on the top 25 list than anywhere else in the state. Organizers say this shows how the state’s economy is shifting.

“It goes beyond the traditional. We have the BMW’s here and the big manufacturers here but these are smaller, very well-run companies that are really the backbones and I really think that’s what the strength of the state is,” said Schliefer.

Wild Creations, headquartered in Myrtle Beach, received the top honor.

Established in 2002, Barling Bay offers information security services to government agencies.
